From May 2025, the way passport photos are created for passports and ID cards will change. The new e-passport photo process is intended to prevent forgeries and digitize the process. Here we explain what this means for you.
What is the e-passport photo?
With the e-passport photo, your photo is no longer brought to the citizens' office as a printout, but is sent to the authority digitally and encrypted. You will receive a QR code in our studio, which you can show to the citizen's office. The office will then securely retrieve your photo.
Why is this being introduced?
The main reason is security: digital transmission prevents passport photos from being subsequently manipulated. It also makes the process easier and faster for everyone involved.
What changes for me?
The e-passport photo will be mandatory for passports from May 2025. It is offered as an option for the ID card. The big difference: You can no longer print out your passport photo at home or have it taken at a machine - it must be transmitted digitally via a certified interface.
Photographer or automaton? Why the photographer is the better choice
Even if machines will offer the e-passport photo process, we recommend going to a photographer. The reason: With a machine you have no advice, no opportunity to make improvements and, in the worst case, your photo will be rejected by the authorities. In our studio we ensure perfect lighting, biometric correctness and you see the result immediately.
How much does an e-passport photo cost at picjoy?
The e-passport photo costs €17.99 - the same as classic passport photos. The shoot only takes about 10 minutes and you will receive your QR code immediately. You will then present this QR code on your next visit to the Citizens' Office.
