Technical requirements:
The US Department of State has set strict technical requirements for visa photos.
Your photo must:
Be recent (taken within the last 6 months)
Have a size of 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm)
Have a resolution of at least 600 x 600 pixels and a maximum of 1200 x 1200 pixels
Be in JPEG format
Have a file size of up to 240 KB
Be in color

Image composition and background:
The photo should show your head and the upper half of your shoulders. Your face should take up 50-69% of the picture height (between 25 mm and 35 mm from the chin to the top of the head). The background should be monochrome and white or cream-colored. Avoid shadows or patterns in the background that could distract from your face. The eyes should have a distance of 28-35 mm to the bottom edge of the picture.

Facial expression and direction of gaze:
Look directly into the camera without smiling or opening your mouth. Keep your eyes open and avoid grimacing or unnatural facial expressions.

Clothing, jewelry, piercings and accessories:
Wear your everyday clothes and avoid uniforms or religious clothing unless it is worn daily for religious reasons. Glasses are not permitted. Jewelry and piercings are permitted as long as they do not cover or distract from your face.

Hair and headgear:
Your hair should appear natural and unaffected. Head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons and should not cover the contours of the face.

Photos of children and infants:
The same requirements also apply to children and infants. Make sure that the child is alone in the picture and that his/her face is clearly visible.

Image editing:
Avoid any kind of image editing or manipulation that changes the appearance. The photo should match your natural appearance.
